Memecoins added $8B in 2026 — the loss math did not change

The sector clawed back more than $8 billion this year with Solana at the centre. A closer look at who actually made money is less cheerful.

The rebound is real

After a genuinely grim 2025, the meme complex spent the first quarter of 2026 recovering. CCN put the sector's Q1 gain at more than $8 billion, lifting total market cap to about $69 billion by quarter end, with $PEPE up 65%, $BONK up 50%, and $DOGE and $SHIB both adding ground.

Solana is where most of it lives. CCN counted roughly $6.7 billion in Solana-hosted memecoin value and peak daily trading volumes above $2.5 billion, with pump.fun having created over 13 million tokens since it launched. $BONK, $WIF, $POPCAT, $PENGU and $FARTCOIN carry the liquidity.

The part that survives every cycle

CCN's caution is the useful half of the piece: roughly 60% of memecoin traders lost money overall in the last cycle, with gains concentrated among insiders, deployers and early participants. The $TRUMP token is the cited example — insiders reportedly made hundreds of millions while retail absorbed billions in losses as the price unwound.

  1. Q1 2026 sector gain: over $8B, to roughly $69B total
  2. Solana memecoin value: ~$6.7B
  3. Peak daily Solana memecoin volume: over $2.5B
  4. Share of traders down overall last cycle: ~60%

What it means for degens

A rising sector market cap tells you liquidity came back. It does not tell you the distribution changed. The same structure that produced a 60% loss rate — concentrated early supply, fee-taking deployers, reflexive volume — is still the structure. Bigger pool, same current.
