What is a memecoin, and why do they all live on Solana?

No whitepaper, no use case, just a joke, a community and a chart that looks like an ECG. The fundamentals in five minutes.

The meme is the product

With a normal crypto project you ask: what does it solve? With a memecoin you ask: who is laughing about it? A memecoin is a token built on a joke, an image or a character. It promises no tech, no roadmap, no revenue. It promises attention, and attention is the hardest currency in crypto markets.

That sounds absurd, but it is honest. Plenty of "serious" projects pretend to have a product and still trade purely on mood. A memecoin skips the theatre.

Why Solana?

  • Fees: a swap costs fractions of a cent. On Ethereum a $5 buy would be gone before it settled.
  • Speed: blocks every 400 milliseconds. If you click, you are in, or you are out.
  • pump.fun: the launchpad where anyone starts a coin in two minutes. No code, no permission, no safety net.
  • Wallets: Phantom and Solflare make onboarding as easy as installing an app.

How a memecoin lives and dies

A typical life cycle: someone launches the coin on pump.fun. A few wallets buy early. An image goes around on X. The chart does 50x in an hour. Then the early wallets sell, the chart flips, the group chat goes quiet. The whole thing takes between twenty minutes and three days.

And then there are the exceptions. Coins where the community does not leave. Where the meme is big enough to carry months. Those exceptions are why the scene exists, and why it is so dangerous: everyone believes they can recognise the exception.

Do I need prior knowledge?
A wallet, some SOL and the ability to check a contract address. Everything else you learn, usually through losses.
What is the difference to Bitcoin?
Bitcoin is money with fixed scarcity and fifteen years of history. A memecoin is a joke with a price. Both can go up; only one is built to last.
Is this gambling?
Traded short term: in most cases yes, with worse odds than a casino. Whoever knows that and plays anyway at least plays honestly.

Check a coin before you apePaste a contract address, get a rug-risk and potential score in seconds.

Not financial advice. Memecoins can go to zero – and usually do. DYOR.
