February Ends in Extreme Fear After Bitcoin Fumbles the $70K Retest

Bitcoin clawed back to $70,000 mid-week, then gave it up on Middle East headlines. A $7.49B options expiry closed the month with the fear gauge pinned in single digits.

A rally that lasted about 48 hours

February did not go out quietly. According to NeuralArB's week-in-review for Feb 23 to Mar 2, Bitcoin opened the stretch with a flash crash to $63,924, then staged a roughly 9% reversal into the psychological $70,000 level on February 26. That was the high-water mark. President Trump's State of the Union on February 24 included no crypto mention despite plenty of speculation that it would, and the market delivered a textbook sell-the-news fade through February 25-26.

What finished the job was geopolitics. US-Israel airstrikes on Iran over February 27-28 triggered a roughly 3% Bitcoin decline, and the month closed with 115,000 BTC options contracts expiring on February 28 at a notional value of $7.49 billion β€” the kind of event that tends to pin spot and widen spreads rather than produce clean trends.

The one genuinely constructive datapoint: US spot Bitcoin ETFs booked roughly $834 million in net inflows, the first positive week after six straight weeks of outflows totalling around $4 billion. February 25 alone brought $506.5 million, with BlackRock's IBIT taking $297.4 million of it.

What it means for degens

Solana closed the week down 1.2% β€” flat, by SOL standards β€” which historically means memecoin volume stays thin rather than dying outright. A fear reading in the single digits is not a buy signal, it is a liquidity warning: thin books, brutal slippage on low-cap exits, and headline risk that does not care what your chart says. The Solana ecosystem also lost some plumbing this month, with Step Finance announcing on February 23 that it was shutting down along with SolanaFloor and Remora Markets after a $30 million hack in late January, per Web3 Is Going Great.
