The mines are the story
Bitcoin looked ready to break $80,000 and then ran into a headline nobody can trade around. CoinDesk reported on April 23 that a classified Pentagon briefing had put mine clearance in the Strait of Hormuz at at least six months once the U.S.-Iran conflict ends β raising the prospect that elevated oil and gasoline prices persist through the midterm elections, keeping inflation sticky and the Federal Reserve's hands tied.
The market read it immediately. WTI crude climbed to roughly $95 from $79 late the previous week, the U.S. 10-year yield rose 8 basis points on the week to 4.32%, and the UK 10-year jumped 18 basis points to 4.96%. Tighter financial conditions, in other words, arriving through the energy pipe rather than the central bank.
Oil prices are rising alongside yields and widening volatility spreads, signaling tighter financial conditions and increasing market risks.

There was one genuinely bullish data point: USDT's market capitalization set a record at $188.88 billion. Dry powder is being staged, even if it is not being spent.
What it means for degens
CoinDesk's own framing of the speculative corner is worth sitting with: it described speculation in non-serious tokens β citing MemeCore β reaching "fever pitch, with overcrowding in bullish bets." Overcrowding is the operative word. CryptoQuant's Julio Moreno added that the recent bitcoin move was driven almost entirely by perpetual futures demand while spot demand kept contracting. A rally built on perps and crowded meme longs, capped by an inflation story with a six-month clock on it, is a structure that unwinds quickly when it unwinds at all.
